The History of the Waldenses JA Wylie 9781539968290 Books

A very compelling read about the sacrifice and final justification and victory of the Waldensian people who suffered from acts of genocidal extermination by the Catholic church for the crime of believing the Bible and not the Catholic's idolatrous, heretical, pagan beliefs.

Fascinating history and sad because the Roman Catholic church was so determined to wipe these Christians off the map for worshipping God and desiring to study God's word for themselves! Four stars
This is a reprint of part of a history of Protestantism written by a Scottish historian and Presbyterian minister, first published in 1860. The information is very informative of a period and place of extreme persecution of a group of dissenters who preceded Martin Luther and others of the "Protestant Reformation" by the Church of Rome and her secular supporters over a span of time greater than 500 years. This information is unknown today to much of the Protestant church which aims and claims to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, probably because the Church of Rome, in its reduced power and influence in worldly affairs, has long since ceased to persecute Protestants and other dissenters with the passion and severity it routinely used when it wielded much greater secular power. Some of this material covers, in extremely graphic detail, the tortures and treatment of the Waldensian dissenters (let readers of delicate sentiments be warned), who refused to submit to the authority and practices of the Papal church, including participation in the Roman mass and sacraments . The value of this book, to me, lies in the warnings of history of the dangers inherent in religions and religious institutions which wield their claims to the Truth as a cudgel with which to subjugate and control dissenters, skeptics, and unbelievers. History reveals that “power corrupts,” and many ideological groups, secular as well as religious, have been guilty of committing terrible atrocities. A list of such groups would include some Protestant Reformers, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Communists, Nazis, and many other groups, as well as the Church of Rome. It is troubling to consider such treatment of human beings by other human beings, not only did take place, but could reappear even in Western society, as it still currently occurs in many other parts of the world. The rhetoric and actions of Muslim fundamentalists such as ISIS (ISIL) and the Taliban come to mind, but other groups are certainly also capable of, and guilty of, similar atrocities.
Very interesting history of the Vaudois. Theywere proton-reformers, practicing an apostolic ,, biblically based faith long before Rome gained power and reform became necessary. Living quietly in the Italian Alps, loyal to the Duke of Savoy, they were hunted, tortured, and murdered as heritics.
Wylie's style is a bit hard to follow, but he does a good job .
Needed to be familiar with the 1st several hundred years of church history that was not written by a corrupt Roman Catholic. This tells some of the story. The writer Mr. Wylie seems more interested in describing the mountains and valleys, the flora and fauna and the weather of the places more than the events that occurred there. It takes some getting used to his way of expressing things. Rather like reading ancient Homer.
The Waldenses were a unique and amazing people living in the Italian Alps and accordingly had to "steer clear" of the papacy residing not far away in Rome. Unfortunately, for the Waldenses, the Papacy knew they were true children of God and tried to foil the Waldenses efforts of maintaining a serene life at nearly every opportunity. Get the book for you'll find no other people in history like the Waldenses and it's an enjoyable read.
This is an excellent book about a people little heard of in my past. The Waldensian name appears only briefly in the history of some modern Bible versions. I just have to know more about them and the part they played in preserving the Scriptures.
Hello folks... A little different review take here. I wanted to let people know that the download - specifically - works quite well, indeed. This is a treat for those of us who enjoy older texts.

I am an author and publisher so I have intimate knowledge onto what kind of effort it takes to convert these older books into a release. This book is a quality release. It is not just a scanned PDF that is too difficult to read on small screens, the text is flowing and works just like any other book. The only gripe that I have is that there is no hypertext enabled table of contents. HOWEVER, for those of you with a with the d-pad included, you can use the left and right d-pad keys to jump through chapters one at a time. Using this functionality it is easy to navigate in large jumps through the text.

I had noticed that no other reviewer had mentioned how it looked on their device (I have both the Fire type reader interface and the eInk older and both display the book without issue) and wanted to reassure those out there contemplating its purchase.

If it had an HTTP TOC I would give it 5 stars.
A very compelling read about the sacrifice and final justification and victory of the Waldensian people who suffered from acts of genocidal extermination by the Catholic church for the crime of believing the Bible and not the Catholic's idolatrous, heretical, pagan beliefs.
